Sneak Peek at Hotel Angeleno

Hotel Angeleno is open! We headed over there to check on the status of construction and instead of men on scaffolding, we saw actual business travelers walking through front doors held by doormen. The valet men were busy taking and parking cars and when we peeked beyond the doors we saw live people behind the desk. Amazing!

As we took a few snapshots, we learned that the hotel has been open for close to three weeks and that only five floors of rooms are open for business--the classic "soft open", or beta phase. The pool and the restaurant, called West, are still under construction but will most likely open by April 1. Of course, opening something April First always gives folks the old "April Fools" excuse in case things don't work out.

We headed up to the rooms in one of the renovated elevators that are a bit long and rectangular rather than a boxy square. Once we stepped out onto the floor, there were dark wood benches against the wall with exotic light fixtures to greet us.

In the king bed guestroom, the area is smallish but has cool views of the Getty and the 405 Freeway--which, surprisingly, is not loud at all, but we didn't sleep there--yet. There's also a 30-inch plasma screen, however, only the King Executive rooms get the plasma. Instead of a closet, there's a tall armoire and the mini-bar is in the bed's nightstand.

The hotel is wired throughout with free wifi and when the pool is finished you'll be able to sip some margaritas in the LA smogshine as you write to HotelChatter to let us know about the kind of service you are getting, hint, hint.

The regular rack rate at Angeleno is $239 but the grand opening special rate is $139 which is an unbelievable bargain for a boutique hotel in Los Angeles. Granted, there is limited food service and still some construction going on, including work on the barrier that will separate the hotel from the ghastly view of the freeway exit ramp, but hey, you're getting Joie de Vivre style and service, and an opening rate price. So is that enough to make you want to wake up to a view of the 405? Your choice.

We are going to watch this one closely, so as always, if you stay here let us know what you think of the place.
