A Bed Bug Ninja's Work is Never Done

March 27, 2006 at 5:12 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Dateline's recent story on bed bugs has put fear in hotel guests everywhere who are afraid they may be bitten during the night.

Now HotelChatter readers are requesting lists of hotels that have bed bugs. While we are working on putting together a list, here are some of the recent stories we have gotten from HotelMavens since the show aired.

If you have a story to submit, please do so by enlisting in Phase II of Bed Bug Ninja training. You can also contribute to the Bedbug Comments thread here.

If you have specific questions about bed bugs, check out Dateline's Q&A with a real live Bed Bug expert, Harold Harlan.

If you have been bitten, Bite Remedy has some good, if a tad gnarly information on curing the bites (invest in anti-itching cream) and getting rid of them for good (bed bugs can't survive extreme temperatures.)

Or if you've been bitten and are royally pissed then you can sue the infested hotel for $20 million, but first just make sure you haven't gone back to that hotel after you've been bitten.

Bed Bug Horror Stories and Questions after the jump.

Here is one guest's report on an Austin, TX hotel:

I returned last year from a film festival in Austin with several rows of bedbug bites (certified by New York dermatologist) acquired after several nights at the famed Driscoll Hotel. I'm very fond of the hotel and would stay there again but...I emailed them this information and did not hear back from them.

Another HotelMaven experienced bed bugs in New Jersey

Last September, I stayed at the The Grand Hotel in Cape May, NJ. The first few nights, I woke up with bites on my legs. I didn't think anything of it, I thought it was a mosquito in the room, not an uncommon thing in NJ. About 1 month after my return, I was still getting bit up by something. It wasn't every night, maybe 2x a week. A friend of mine mentioned something about the epidemic of bed bugs that was infecting the U.S. So after work that night, I took a flashlight and searched my bed. And guess what....I found 2 bed bugs! I truly believe I brought bed bugs home from my stay at the Grand Hotel. I did find some shell sheddings in my suitcase 1 month after my return.

And some questions:

Do you know of any hotels in capri, rome, taormina & barcelona that have been reported to have bed bugs? I am spending a month in italy and spain this summer and am a bit nervous about the bed bug epidemic?

Gives us some names of hotels in big cities that have had bedbug problems...going to Denver (Aurora) Colorado in April...would really like a list of hotels that have had bedbugs problems in that area

We are traveling I-75 between Michigan and Florida a few times a year. We stay one night at a motel or hotel right off I-75. Usually in TN. or GA. Close to the border of each. Do you know of any motel/hotel that is infected or has been along this route?
