La Spiaggia Hotel in Cinque Terra, Italy is ranked #1 on TripAdvisor thanks to its friendly bike-riding hotelier, Andrea Poggi.

One recent guest had this to say about her host:

We arrived after dark by train, and the rooms were all booked.... our fault. But because we had called ahead, Andrea's wife had cooked us some food along with some wine. He sent us on our way to watch the firework show- a local town celebration was going on. When we returned, he had transportation waiting to take us to a nearby hotel. When we awoke the next morning, they picked us back up and brought us to the biggest room- a beautiful terrace overlooking the mountains and ocean.

The hotelier even asked the young lady and her friend to join him during his afternoon swims and at the dinner table, but totally in a "grandfatherly" way.

An extra bonus? Stay for 3 nights and get a free bottle of wine. However, the hotel rooms are not luxurious by any means. The hotel is simply a small family-run spot by the beach concerned with wine and food so the guestrooms are rather cramped and sparse without comfy-looking beds and luxury sheets.

But if you happen to be two blonde American girls, Signor Poggi will take care of you.

    Cinque Terre 2006

    CINQUE TERRE 2006
A much belated partial review of our trip in the summer of  2006. We stayed at the two star La Spiaggia Hotel in Monterossa. (The espresso's always on.) This is a small hotel on the beach run by Andrea Poggi whose ancestral home is on the main street. Andrea is truly a "local". Four star hotels don't appeal to us, as we enjoy exploring places on our own. Andrea was very helpful, giving advice and suggestions when requested, but leaving us alone and not being obtrusive. He does not fawn over his guests. Our trip had many highlights--- Wanting to picnic, Andrea suggested a walk " up the hill on paved steps, to the left past the train station, and just before the tunnel, keep to the left." We did, and ended up in a paved courtyard of a church adjoining a convent. A Gregorian chant was in the background, probably choir practice. A sign in the courtyard, in Italian, said "No Picnics" , so we walked further up the hill and ended up in the town cemetery. Hundreds of above ground crypts, some stacked four high. At the very top if the hill, surrounded by crenulated stone walls, we had a 360 degree view, with the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the terraced hills of Cinque Terre on the other. We decided not to pin-nic with the dead and began the walk back down the hill. After a few short steps, we came to a set of stairs covered with shade, which was a good place to eat as we were so hot and hungry.
We did the obligatory walking tour of the five towns. Andrea suggested a restaurant along the way. Unbeknownst to us, he called ahead and made reservations. We showed up with a table and bottle of wine waiting. We had seafood antipasti. They kept bringing different dishes of various seafood -octopus, sardines-prepared different ways, small minnows, stuffed mussels, two different seafood salads, etc. etc. and two different wines. Anyway, this was just amazing, the best meal we've ever had anywhere .I'm reluctant to say the name of the restaurant, so if you're interested, you'll just have to ask Andrea. We had a long walk back to the hotel, I had one more macchiato. (The espresso's always on,)
    This trip was truly fantastic!!!
