Mymymymymy. Remnants from the glory days of The Plaza were put on sale yesterday by Christies auction house.
The auction was estimated to net $750,000 but instead totalled $1,760,760. Someone plunked down $42,000 for the hotel's old Steinway baby grand piano, just a small price to pay for a piece of The Plaza.
Other lucky rich people made off with the bellmen uniforms with mesh-topped hats, paintings and even doorknobs.
NYC's most infamous hotel closed for a $350 million renovation last year, and will reopen sometime in the fall with a fresh coat of paint and a a mix of condos and hotel rooms (but more condos than guestrooms.)
