Checking in on Miami: Mayfair Hotel and Spa

Where: 3000 Florida Avenue [map], Coconut Grove, FL, United States

Ok, Coconut Grove isn't technically Miami but it is a hop, skip and a short drive on some bridges away. And it's also where one of the newest Kimpton properties has sprung up.

Kimpton bought the Mayfair Hotel and Spa about a year and a half ago and has given the hotel a major face-lift but the existing structure of the hotel remains the same and that's a good thing.

More on the hotel post-click.

There are two open courtyards that are enormous. The hotel is built in a sort of funky shape on the corner block next to Biscayne Bay that is not quite an L and not a square. Maybe it's more like a V.

Anyways, it has the motel feel where you step out of your room and practically into one of the courtyards but of course this is no motel. Most of the decor inside and out is hand-carved mahogany and tiles. The rooms all have funky suite names like the Fluffy Ruffle suite. And there's the 4500-square-foot Jurlique Spa, with treatments like revitalizing massages and rejuvenating facials.

Inside the rooms are 42” plasma flat screen television, LCD televisions in bathrooms, marble baths, DVD and CD players and a microwave.

The only obvious negative is that the hotel is still building their rooftop pool which they hope to have open by the summer. Once completed it will have a resort-style rooftop deck, infinity pool, a bar and private cabanas with their own plasma screen televisions.

But for now, you get teased by the signs pointing to the Rooftop Pool and then are greeted by plywood barriers and construction.
