A month or so ago we received an email from a trusted Hotel Maven who exclaimed with bravado:

I just got a room at DreamNY for under $250 at the end of February! It has to be better than the Paramount.

We warned this Hotel Maven that a certain Sikh billionaire in waiting has had his fair share of problems living the Dream, at least according to the Hotel Mavens. However, like so many, this Hotel Maven was in love with the price paid.

How a former New Yorker could be so eagerly anticipating a stay at an oft-panned boutique hotel in Times Square--*pause* which is named for the good times you have...in it--is beyond us. Shows you what living in California can do to you, if you ask us.

Thinking we had sufficiently set DreamNY expectations at or below zero, we were surprised to get an irate phone call (yes, some of the Hotel Mavens have our phone number) last night from this very DreamNY hotel guest who was now safely in his 55th Street room:

Hotel Maven: They don't have iPods in the rooms, or at the front desk. They claim people were stealing them and that is why they don't hand them out so freely any longer--only have a few available for hand out--but we know the truth. I will call back in the morning and see if any guests "returned" their iPods so others could use them, but I have my doubts.

HotelChatter: Uh huh.

Hotel Maven: The king room is tiny. I mean it is bigger than the Paramount, but it was small. At least it had a flat screen TV, but my girlfriend checked out the bathroom and found it to be dirty. Some stray hair hanging around, half used toiletries--doesn't look like they thoroughly cleaned it before we arrived.

HotelChatter: Maybe Vikram was inspired by JetBlue's cleaning program.  That is how JetBlue saves a ton of cash, might work for Vikram as well.

Hotel Maven: Well we marched down to the front desk and asked for a clean room. They showed us a Junior Suite that was smaller than our King and had a queen bed!

HotelChatter: They gave you an option? That is progress--almost service.

Hotel Maven: Wait it gets better. I bitched some more and they finally coughed up a suite. Two big rooms, 37" plasma screens, king bed--on the 9th floor. The room is huge. It is great!

HotelChatter: This is the best report we have ever heard about DreamNY.You were upset with state of your accommodations so they tried to accommodate you, and sounds like it worked.

Hotel Maven: Yeah, and for the price, I mean, we are really pleased. Still no iPods, but with this room who cares.

HotelChatter: This surge in customer service just so happens to coincide with Vikram's long ass honeymoon. Hmm, his absence equals a better hotel. This can't be a coincidence, can it?

Hotel Maven: Who cares, we have a giant room in New York.

HotelChatter: Yeah, and great eating establishments, like Sbarro, are only five blocks away.
