San Francisco on a Budget

One NY Craigslister sent a note to the community asking whether anyone has any hotel-hook ups in the San Francisco area, as "hotels are so ridiculously expensive."
Well friend, here are some suggestions:
Orbitz lists a deal at the Omni San Francisco, a classy hotel in the heart of the city, but it'll still set you back roughly $217 / night.
Expedia quoted about $140/ night at the family run Chancellor Hotel on Union Square. Trip Advisors' guests rate it one of 2005's Best Location for the Best Price. One word: Bargain.
Last Minute Travel, has some hot deals (but maybe not at the hottest hotels.) You can stay from $36/ night at The Abigail Hotel, and the third night is free. Location is central, but recent guests characterize it as a "rat hole" or "dump," one guest even went so far to say "We took one look at the room and walked out."
OK, that was an extreme example. LMT also has 4 star places for $74/night.
If it's free you are seeking, check out the Hospitality Club. It's a free organization hooking up travelers and places to crash.
