New Orleans Update: Hotel Layoffs

February 2, 2006 at 2:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

While we updated the status of hotels recovering from Hurricane Katrina a while back, some news has trickled in today regarding layoffs at the Ritz Carlton.

Up to 340 people who were not transferred to other hotels and were not actively workin at the now-defunct Ritz were laid off this week.

The Ritz will remain shut down until the end of 2006 or early 2007 as crews repair the mechanical and ventilation equipment.

The Hyatt Regency New Orleans will also remain closed until Spring 2007. The Fairmont New Orleans Hotel and the Park Plaza hotel also remain closed. (The Park Plaza property actually doesn't belong to Park Plaza anymore.)

About 22,000 hotel rooms are functioning in the city and just outside but compared to 39,000 rooms before the storm, there's still a long way to go.
