To get to the W San Diego just start looking for the all the bail bond shops.

While most other hotels in San Diego stick close to either Petco Park or the convention center, the W opened up near the federal and civil buildings and the jail.

It's this odd location that makes the W, despite its unbeatable rooftop beach bar and standard W coolness, a bit of a loss. The walk to and from the Gaslamp is do-able but not pleasant especially walking through some sketchy blocks or after a few too many margaritas.

More on the W and photos post-click.

Nevertheless, most people will choose to stay at the W simply because of the name and the experience.

The Beach bar is one of the hottest bars in town, thanks to the actual heated sand placed on the ground, cabanas, fire pits and the hip seating options (See pics below.)

The lobby is not just a room to walk through on the way to the elevators or to the restaurant. There is a long row of high-back wicker chairs and sets of checkers/chess tables. Also comfy little seating alcoves face the street and with a full-service bar in the lobby and the restaurant Rice next door, you can pretty much order whatever you want.

Rooms are spacious and comfortable with a bit of a nautical theme that stays classy (heh heh.) Except the hallways and the elevator are super-dark. Like borderline too dark and you wonder if the W is trying to save some cash on the electric bill. Two guests in the elevator commented on this and then said, "Oh well, you come here for the ambiance and experience"

True dat, double true.
