Hurricane Katrina Update: Federal Hotel Funding Stopped

February 12, 2006 at 9:32 PM | by | ()

Today is the last day for families left homeless by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to stay in hotels on the government dime as the federally funded hotel privileges will be stopped.

Last week, 4,500 hotel occupants lost FEMA funding because they failed to register with the agency. Still, 5,000 hotel rooms across the country will still be paid for by FEMA. Some families will be able to pay for their hotel rooms on their own but more than 1,100 families will have to be referred to other charities to take care of the room bill.
