Where to stay when you leave.

The (Un-)Clean Scene at Hotels

Recently, an ABC news team went into several hotel rooms--ranging from expensive to cheap-- in big cities like Miami, New York and Los Angeles with a black light (you know those things that were cool in college dorm rooms but also made your teeth look yellow and showed every particle of dirt, detergent or stains on your jeans?)

What they found is so disturbing that we will only mention two words to sum up their results--semen and urine.

But this doesn't necessarily mean you should stay at home for the rest of your life. You do have options to fight this battle.

Miami Beach 411 has listed 6 Tips for a cleaner hotel room experience which include:

  • Remove the hotel bedspread. Tests showed this to be the most germ-laden thing in the whole room.

  • Travel with sanitizing wipes. Wipe things that people touch a lot, such as the phone and TV remote control.

  • Wash your hands.

  • Look for rust-colored stains on sheets and bedspreads. It can be a sign that bedbugs are present.
  • They also suggest chatting up the maid and showing your appreciation daily, but we say just give the maid $20 and take the whole cleaning cart into your room to be prepared.
