Real People Are Buying Hotel Swag

Douglas Reeves bought this piece of art from the Charles Hotel for $1,250.

Hotels have been selling their wares for quite some time now, starting off with Westin Hotels in 1999 when they offered up their "Heavenly Beds" to hotel guests.

Now the NY Times reports that hotels are selling pretty much everything and anything they can and guess what? There's actually people out there who want this stuff.

Now other hotels sell beds, including Sofitel with its MyBed collection, sold through its SoBoutique; the W Group through its W The Store; all Four Seasons and Ritz-Carltons; and the Kimpton Group, whose KimptonStyle program offers plush mattress sets -- for which Benjamin S. Farrah, his wife and his mother give thanks. Karen Farrah said she bought the bed from the Topaz, a Kimpton hotel in Washington, after she noticed that her husband... "was sleeping better at the hotel than at home, much to my chagrin."

Another hotel guest at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Mass., Douglas Reeves, noticed a portrait that "looked eerily like him" and even bore his name. When he found out the art wasn't for sale, he negotiated with the hotel to buy it for $1,250.

Other hotel products guest like? The Gansevoort's music compilation CD, the Soho Grand's Mammoth Minty Scrub Soap from Bliss, the Fresh line of skincare products at Hotel Vitale and Westin's white tea scents. One man even liked the  bathtub from the Hong Kong Peninsula hotel so much, he brought it (along with other things) home with him.

The plus side in all of this--aside from buying a hotel's piece of art that just happens to resemble you--is that you can use the loyalty reward points to purchase a hotel's wares as the Farrah couple did.

Although, we're pretty sure if you're trying to buy the art off the walls or the pants off the concierge, those reward points won't work.
