Step Inside Zoe Cassavetes' Six Degrees of Hotels
Zoe Cassavetes may not be a familiar name right now but we predict that she will very soon.
Daughter of indie director John Cassavetes and actress Gena Rowlands, Zoe shunned the film-making world in favor of...get this...the hotel world. We know, crazy. Zoe made her mark at Andre Balazs' Mercer Hotel where she worked as an marketing exec for several years, all the while being a staple at the all important fashion shows.
Now she's the director/screenwriter behind "Broken English" starring Parker Posey about a workaholic hotel employee who falls in love with a Frenchman. We would say she's the next Sophia Coppola, but apparently she's already best friends with the award-winning director of hotel movie fave, "Lost in Translation."
And it's clear that both these women have a strong connection to hotels and each other, from the moment they met as teens:
Cassavetes...met Sofia about 12 years ago, when they were both in a Vogue photo shoot. ''She was so quiet,'' Cassavetes recalled, ''that I thought she might be a jerk. My family lived at the Wyndham Hotel then. I grew up there -- Zsa Zsa lived on my floor. Sofia and her family were living up the street at the Sherry-Netherland.
Indeed, Coppola also directed the White Stripes video featuring Kate Moss on a stripper pole in the downstairs of the Mercer Hotel. However, Cassavetes has abandoned Balazs hotels for films but expect to see more hotel influence in her projects.
"Broken English" is set for a 2007 release.
