MTV and Frommer's Team Up to Show Us How to Be Shallow Idiots No Matter Where We Go

Finally, a travel guidebook series for the reality TV crowd.

According to an AP article running in today's USA Today, MTV and Frommer's are hooking up to give us yet another guidebook series. Apparently Let's Go and the new Wallpaper guides don't spend enough space on what the MTV crowd is looking for: the hottest places to get sloshed and the best places to ensure frequent coupling. So add another guidebook series for Europe to the two dozen already jostling for space on the shelves.

The Italy guide includes a description of the "most awesome ancient ruins." It then gets down to its reason for being however: showing readers how to do exactly what they've been doing the rest of the year at home--go out partying!

The book also recommends the Riviera Romagnola towns of Rimini and Riccione on the Adriatic Coast as anything-goes destinations for serious partying, and Perugia and Bologna as "best college towns." For bars, the Drunken Ship in Rome and the Red Garter in Florence are described as places where "body shots and Power Hour drink specials" will remind you of spring break. Less wild but also highly recommended bars include Vineria Reggio on Campo de' Fiori in Rome, Rock Castle in Perugia, Corto Maltese in Bologna and Bar Magenta in Milan.

Yes, there will be information about budget hotels and hostels, of course, but we are supposed to believe the ones these guidebooks pick are the hottest. (Never mind that nagging gap between research time and publication time in the book world.)

And we're not quite sure MTV watchers know how to read. Maybe doing a "True Life: I Got Sloshed in Italy" would be a better idea.

Re: MTV and Frommer's

The first thing I thought when I read this was...wasn't that supposed to happen a few years ago? They were going to have the Real World Paris kids do the first one, except it turns out they plagiarized everything, and it must have been quite an embarassment...hope they pick better authors this time around.

Re: MTV and Frommer's

you're right, i think real world paris did do that! i know i am getting old when i need to google the show to remember who was on it. in case you needed to know, hottie Ace, cranky southie CJ and gisele-lookalike Mallory.

If anyone from the Duel writes a book I think I have to buy it.  Especially CT.
