The Czech Star System Still Not Perfect

Just as France can't be judged solely by Paris, nor can Czech Republic for Prague. It's only fair to check out some other of the country's offerings.

Travel blogger Sophia Kulich recently stayed not in Prague but in Cesky Krymlov and found a 5 star hotel. Now, we know what we always say: be wary of the star system in the Czech Republic. But as Kulich is a travel agent, we will give a little bit of trust to her rap of the Hotel Ruze:

This is the best hotel in Cezky Krymlov but besides being luxury 5* hotel, it has character. It compares with paradors in Spain and Posadas in Portugal. It used to be a Jesuit monastery in 16C and it is more like a museum.

People just come in to sightsee it. It is not for everybody since it is not modern, and room was typical room in tower with a small window as in turret and what a view - a river and a castle! The hotel is meticulously restored and is an experience in itself.

Sounds nice but sorry, we still will never truly trust the Czech star system and we're not alone. The most recent TripAdvisor review headlines as "far from a 5 star!"

We're not saying this hotel isn't nice but until they just replace their old duvets for Egyptian cotton and add WiFi, we can't give them the five-star rating.

Thank you for posting info from my blog.
The link to my blogs SophiasTravel is broken.
Instead of link you have http://sophiastravel.blogspot.com/2006/10/2006-october-27-nov-3-czech-republic.html
    It should be

And, I still stand by my words it is the best hotel in Cesky Krymlov regardless of rating. It probably can be rated as 4*+ but each European country has different ratings - it is not universal. I looked at tripadvisor.com and number one hotel rated there Leonardo does not even compare with Ruze. It is small 3* hotel. I've seen it. Maybe Dvorak but it is not as impressive as Ruze. Sorry, wi-fi did not made to Cesky Krymlov yet. Remember it was forsaken by Czech government at the communist time. To me, they are doing pretty well as of now! Sorry no wi-fi in rooms but there is free computer in the lobby.
They are restoring the town but they do it carefully . I hope it will not become as another Rothenburg. It is the best charming small castle town we've seen and we've been in many places in Europe.

As a matter of fact, in independent travel service Star Service Online which travel agents subscribe, they give the following review. They rate as 4* but their stars are higher then US rated system,

Hotel Ruze perches on a rocky outcropping overlooking the Vltava River and the lovely old UNESCO World Heritage listed town. This plush, Renaissance-themed hotel fills a reconstructed 16th-century Jesuit monastery.
Sliding glass doors open to checkered marble floors, heavy wooden ceilings and two suits of armor guarding reception. The interior shows heavy beams, dark paneling, tapestries, knight paraphernalia and staff in period costume. Practically every public room has a suit of armor and one broadsword. Well-crafted details such as handblown wine glasses and wrought-iron fixtures temper the hotel's tendency toward kitsch. Wooden chairs around inlaid chessboard tables cluster in the lounge.
The restaurant boasts vaulted ceilings and tapestries and serves Czech and international dishes with an emphasis on medieval fare, mostly roasted and grilled meats. Diners can also take their meals on a terrace with spectacular river views. A vaulted ceiling strung with brass chandeliers crowns the lobby bar, which serves mead along with modern drinks. The cellar wine tavern combines farmer furniture and country fabrics with a loud stereo and a spinning disco ball.
Guests tone up in the extensive fitness center with a V-shaped pool (with poolside bar), solarium, fitness room and sauna. The sauna exacts extra fees, and massages are available upon prior arrangement.
Three Medieval-feeling meeting rooms host between 40 and 200 guests. The largest, the Jesuit Hall, is a lavish hall with coffered ceilings, heavy drapes and ornate wood paneling. Parking is in a garage, and limited technical equipment is available. There is no business center. The hotel-owned minibus can be used for getting around town.
Stone lintels frame small Renaissance-style doors that open to spacious guest rooms with exposed wooden beam ceilings, Dagobert-style chairs, Persian rugs atop hardwood floors, fresh green plants, scrolled beds, quality period fabrics and brass chandeliers. Phones, TVs and minibars are reminders of the modern world. White tiled baths come with towel warmers, plastic counters, hair dryers and a wooden throne that makes everyone feel like royalty. Standard rooms have dial-up Internet access, and Deluxe rooms boast high-speed. Views are of the tower, river or courtyard. The staff is friendly but occasionally lethargic. Some non-smoking rooms are available, and there is one wheelchair-accessible room. Room service runs until midnight.
Ruze is one of the best and most extravagant hotels outside Prague, and certainly the most deluxe address in Cesky Krumlov, but some visitors will prefer the subtler Dvorak.
