Miami Hotels Opening Report: Gansevoort South

The Miami South Beach hotel scene is blowing up and it's not all about Nicky O. This week we are taking a look at some of the planned hotels for Miami which includes hotels for which construction has begun and hotels which still remain a pipe dream. If you have any tips about South Beach hotels that you wanna share with us, send 'em down.

The plans for a Hotel Gansevoort South were announced way back when in November 2005 but so far, nothing but a bunch of renderings has materialized.

The hotel is set to be built within a luxury apartment building on Collins Avenue, called, Paradiso Miami. There will be 232 rooms, a teak roof deck and a tri-level beach club with "cabanas and fire pits at night."

When it finally opens (see projected dates below), the place will give bridge and tunnel crowd who visit the Gansevoort in NYC a place to stay in the winter. Although, we seriously hope this hotel has higher aspirations for itself.

Projected Hotel Opening Date:There has never been a clear opening date, but it was rumored to open late 2006/early 2007.

What we think: Late 2007/Early 2008.

The place is an $850 per night DUMP...  We were recently there for the WMC and were NOT impressed...  The Ganesvoort used to be the Roney Palace and looked like a convalescent home chock full of elderly people just a few short years ago.   Today, it's just the same old dirty Roney with a fresh coat of paint, some Ikea-looking furniture, a sharkless shark-tank, and a few younger but completely classless faces.  In my years of traveling to South Beach I have seen hotel/lounge  projects come and go (Maxim at the Royal Palm, Nicky O, etc.) and as far as I am concerned this one should definitely GO-- straight back to the meat packing district.  By the way- the Hotel isn't even in South Beach as SoBe technically ends at 23rd Street.  There are far nicer places in South Beach to spend your money-- I would the Delano, the Ritz Carlton, or the Setai.

Their rooftop lounge was horrible as well.  As we breezed past the the "fashion guru" door jerk we could not help but notice he was very inappropriately dressed for the tropics-- silver boots, a jacket, and A big scarf... That may be all the rage in NY, but this is South Beach in March, not January in the meatpacking district.
Then the fire marshal told us not to go up because the rooftop was dangerously over capacity.  When we finally did get up there we left almost immediately as the music was loud, tinny, and average and there were hundreds of shabbily dressed cheap scurvy sycophants wearing their best village thrift threads doing their best to look entirely bored.  What fun!

My friend went to Gansevoort South this past weekend (http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/9251/n595929026685217391vn5.jpg). I asked her what she thought about the hotel and the review by SOBE IBIZA NY MILAN.  She said "I thought it was beautiful and had some great photo opps.  That review is based on the fact someone didn't get there ass kissed...let him go back to NY!"
