[Ed. Note: Long time readers may remember Hotel Maven switchcoast, who moved from New York to the Bay Area last spring and chronicled his hotel stays along the way. Well, he is back, er, sort of. Looks like switchcoast has had a sex change, of sorts. His new reviews are a little softer, and as it turns out, the latest stories are authored by his new female companion. The couple visited a bunch of hotels in the last month including the Montecito Inn, which is reviewed after the jump. Enjoy.]

This Montecito landmark was built as an ode to Charlie Chaplin, and its quaint “bed and breakfast” style is mixed with an eclectic charm that has made this hotel a mainstay of this upscale neighborhood just south of Santa Barbara.

While we appreciated the historical value of the building itself, it made for a frustrating (and noisy) experience due to the lack of modern features and improvements. The thin walls made for early mornings, as we could hear the housekeeping staff yell to each other over the din of the vacuum around 8 am. We were also treated to the sound of our neighbor announcing to her husband that she was about to take a bubble bath, which we would’ve known anyway because the temperature in our shower changed dramatically when anyone else in the building ran their water.

While most of the décor in the room was charming, the tiles in the shower were painted with a large tiger…in jungle grass no less! The tiny sink and toilet pushed up right against the bathroom door made for a somewhat claustrophobia-inducing experience, but the spacious sitting room in the lobby and beautiful pool area made you feel like you were getting a bit more space for your dollar.

The workout facilities were a decent size, clean and easily accessible. The staff was friendly and assisted us quickly, and access to valet parking was helpful in this crowded downtown area. Our proximity to the main street in Montecito made where we were staying that much more desirable, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the incredible dinner that we had at Lucky’s, the steakhouse next door.
