A Hilton Grows in San Diego
San Diego is getting a 30-story Hilton Hotel on an old shipyard of the waterfront in hopes of boosting the next-door convention center business.
City officials are eager to boost the attendance and events held at the convention center and believe this mega-Hilton is just the trick, but offer no specific reasons why. Maybe its because the hotel--as shown in an artist-rendered photo--looks like a giant computer chip?
Never mind, because what's good for the convention center will hopefully be good for the city. Officials expect to collect nearly $8 million from the hotel in room taxes. (Despite overcharging visitors to the city's hotels for 15 years, debt-ridden San Diego still needs more.)
Construction begins today but the 1,190-room hotel won't be finished until 2008. In the meantime, if you are traveling to San Diego for convention center things, you can hit up the Marriott Hotel and Marina and the Manchester Grand Hyatt on San Diego Bay.
Coincidentally, HotelChatter is heading to San Diego this weekend. If there are any hotels you would like us to check-out, mail us your suggestions. Don't worry, we promise to keep San Diego classy.
