Meet Scottish Hotelier Lorna Jay

Meet Lorna Jay. She's the hotelier behind the unfortunately-named Spread Eagle Hotel in Jedburgh, Scotland where it is "the oldest continually-licensed hotel."

As Lorna Jay will tell you, running a hotel is no easy gig:

[D]ealing with the laundry monster after nine guests checked out this morning. 3 double beds= 3 duvet covers, 12 pillowslips, 6 sheets, 6 towels. Thank heavens for two washing machines and two tumble driers.

In another post, Lorna was stuck dealing with the Plaster Monster when she was fixing the Ladies' Loo. But all turned out ok, as she found a bit of historical evidence.

We've suspected, from old maps, that what is now the Ladies' was originally an entrance either into the building, or to a narrow covered walkway....Underneath all the perished plaster I found the first faced stone I've seen in the construction of the building.

(The hotel building was presumed to be built around 1450 as a monks' residence.)

We love Lorna Jay for several reasons. For one, she gives herself cute names when she has to do work around the hotel like the name Mrs. Mop. Two, she knits with a passion and usually while she's serving pints in the hotel pub. Or as she calls it KIP--Knitting In Public. And three, despite running the Spread Eagle, she finds the time to blog. Need we say more?
