NY Times travel writer Bonnie Tsui shacked up at Hotel Básico recently and here is what we learned:

·   The hotel is not right on the beach, but it is just a block away.

·   Free wireless is avialable.

·   The on-site bar is loud enough to interfere with your sleep.

·   A white Polaroid camera and film is attached to your bedpost.

·   The rooftop lounge offers two giant soaking tubs, some beach beds, and a kick ass view of the Caribbean and Cozumel.

Bonnie's bottomline?

--not right on the beach, but it offers a central location, a friendly staff and an excellent food and bar scene. It is ideal for hipsters and young couples on a romantic getaway looking for something different in tropical-themed rooms with a playful minimalist air.

Also: Each of the 15 rooms comes with flippers and the rooftop soaking pools are made out of old oil tanks.
