The Mondrian is Ian Schrager's Sunset Strip creation. Since both Asia de Cuba and Skybar are onsite, this property doesn't get a whole lot of attention as a hotel. We had to dig deep to get the latest on the hotel portion of this Hollywood property.

If you find yourself at Skybar--which always feels exclusive, even during slow nights, when it isn't that difficult to get into--you will probably be subject to some sort of celebrity sighting. So if you are in town to gawk at celebs, and are willing to shell out plenty of cash to do so, you will be perfectly happy with your stay.

Furthermore, you won't be sacrificing service if you stay here. Guests repeatedly told us they felt the Mondrian was on par with the Ritz, as far as service is concerned. We came away impressed during our brief interaction with the staff. The minions of "all-whites" jump to attention when you need to retrieve your car, the doormen treat everyone they encounter with a high level of respect, and even the bartenders make you feel important while you are at the Mondrian.

So what is wrong?

For starters the pool was under renovations while we were there. Ok, ok, management probably figured January was a great time for renovations, but with the temperature hovering around 80 degrees, let's just say the lack of an available pool was a big omission.

Also, many guests reported that while their rooms were sizeable, they were kinda beat--a real bummer when you pay upwards of $400 a night.

Ah, Mr. Schrager. He can always create a scene, but as we have told you in the past, his properties don't age well.

Someone needs to come in and renovate the rooms, get that pool back in working order and then this place may once again be the place to stay, but for now it is just a pretty scene hotel with great service.  Hey, you could do a lot worse.

What guests were saying:

·   You are treated absolutely awesome.

·   Dude, the pool is under construction?  For $400 a night--no pool?

·   Only complaint is the high charges for anything you choose to use in your rooms e.g. a teabag ($3).

·   The rooms need to be remodled, they are lookin' beat.
