Crooked Cronies in San Diego

"Come and knock on our door..." and we will take all your money.

For the past 15 years, San Diego County in Southern California has overcharged hotel and motel guests more than $4 million.

It's a long story about bureaucratic redtape, cronyism, and loopholes but to make it short, the room tax was illegally increased to 9 percent back in 1990.

The county administrators recently rolled it back to 8 percent, where it should have been but they may bring it back up to 9 percent with a proper vote.

The good news is if you stayed in San Diego between 2002 and now, you may be able to get a refund on your money so long as you have your receipts.

"County Counsel John Sansone said people who paid the 9 percent tax can be reimbursed by the county, but only going back to 2002 because of a three-year statute of limitations. Guests need their receipts to get refunds, he said."
