[Editor's Note: Ah, the divisive nature of hotel reviews. A Hotel Maven writes in claiming Charleston Place didn't live up to its billing:]

Charleston Place, supposedly the best hotel in Charleston, is far from it. Due to all of its great reviews, we were looking forward to having a great stay. We were wrong! When checking in, we asked to be upgraded from our club floor room to a suite. The woman replied, "YOU ARE THE UPGRADE!"

I do not like to be treated like that anywhere nonetheless when I am shelling out more than 400 dollars a night. We live nearby so we have tried other hotels in the Charleston area.

A word of advice, if in Charleston book one of the two suites at the John Rutledge House. My other pick would be Wentworth Mansion, where the rooms are beautiful (some of the best in the US) but I sadly cannot say the same about the staff.

Also, it does not have the location the John Rutledge House has. If you want more of a mainstream experience (meaning a big hotel lacking in character) stay at the Market Pavillion. But do not get me wrong, the Market Pavillion is a very good hotel! But just do not stay at Charleston Place!

[However, another recent guest was thrilled with the place:]

My wife and I stayed at Charleston Place last weekend for three days and found it to be the best overall experience we have ever had at a hotel anywhere in the world, including New York, New Orleans, Paris and London. We had a club level room and the staff was simply marvelous.

So what is the truth? In cases like this we always think the truth lies somewhere in between. However, it is a very expensive hotel, so you may want to think twice if you aren't able to get a suitable price. Nothing worse than overpaying only to be disappointed.

In any event, the truth is out there, so if you stayed at the Charleston Place go ahead and chime in in the comments section below.
