Bed & Breakfasts: No Longer Just For Old Rich Folks

When you think B&Bs you probably think of old stodgy British (or New England) houses with old school interiors and overly nice hosts.

While that stereotype still exists, there is a new clan of young urban entrepreneurs who are changing the B&B market. You know the type, a young couple who wants to ditch their harried city slicker lives, sell the stock and the loft, and start a new life up in Maine or rural England, as a hotelier. They buy an old farmhouse and fix it up and market it to career-weary weekenders.

So where can you find examples of these new urban style B&Bs?  All over the place, including the UK, the birthplace of the original B&B.  Dun Na Mara in Argyll is one such new urban B&B (UBB).

Dun Na Mara is an isolated escape with its own sand/shingle beach that lends itself to private beach walks and sunset watching.

Rumor is back in the crazy 1970s Paul McCartney knocked on the door of this seven room Edwardian villa checkbook in hand. However, the Beatle was rebuffed by the owner, who eventually sold to current owners Mark and Suzanne. The couple are both architects by trade and have refreshed the old villa with modern, minimalist design.
