Ok, ok, admit it--you have never given Providence Rhode Island a thought. If you have it is probably because of Rick Pitino, Buddy Cianci, or Peter Griffin. However, if you find yourself in Providence, and you are looking for a place to stay in town, you might want to check out your newest option, Hotel Providence.

Hotel Providence opened this past February, and is still finding its footing in a constantly evolving section of downtown Providence. However, the staff seems to have settled in nicely. The entire staff was consistently friendly and helpful during our one night stay.

The 80 room hotel is independently owned, and is the the only Rhode Island hotel to gain membership to the Small Luxury Hotels association.. As soon as you step foot in the lobby you will notice the hotels prominent antique design theme. Seriously, from lobby to rooms, this place looks straight out of "Anique Roadshow". The antiques were hand selected from hotelier Stanley Weiss's own collection.

Not everything about Hotel Providence focuses on the old, both in-room WiFi and free ethernet are included on the hotels amenities list. There is definitely still something decadent about surfing the web while sitting in a Queen Anne-style armchair. Furthermore, the rooms are sizable (we were in Junior Suite 726) comfortable, and include a bunch of must-haves like irons, ironing boards, hair dryer, and clean, large, bathrooms.

Another on site highlight has to be L'Epicureo, the highly touted Hotel Providence in-lobby restaurant. We didn't get a chance to dine there, but after talking with patrons, it appears this place lives up to the hype. One downer, as of this posting, the restaurant is not yet providing in-room dining. Maybe soon?

Ok so what about location? Well, Providence is one of those forever "up and coming" cities in New England. You know, down-trodden mill town trying to make good--sort of the same theme as every VH1 Behind The Music episode. That said, Hotel Providence is located within walking distance of all the major Providence attractions:waterfire, universities, and the mall. On the other hand, downtown Providence isn't the quietest place at night, so expect to hear hooligans going well into the morning on the streets below.

So back to our original question--What would Peter Griffin do? We think he would say, "Good food, right downtown, free Internet for Chris and a hair dryer for Lois, sounds freakin' sweet."

Hotel Providence was kind enough to put us up for the night so we could check the place out first hand, which we thank them for.

Room Rates $139-$300
