Recent question came to us here at HC HQ:

"My 18 year old daughter is a big fan of Ryan Adams, he has a whole album about Hotel Chelsea, she is enamored with the hotel and would like to stay there when we visit New York. Is it safe? Is it a good place for a mother/daughter trip to NYC?"

Well. Hotel Chelsea is definitely a temple of culture. It probably isn't the place for a mother/daughter "NYC theatre and shopping trip". However, if Hotel Chelsea is a must, and you two are down with the vibe, make sure you book early, it fills up fast, and budget for at least $150 a night. Also, remember this isn't the Marriott--set expectations.

Here are some quotes from other visitors that may help you make your decision. Good luck, and as always, report back to us.

The first quote is from Milos Forman. Are you like us do you always get him and Roman Polanski mixed up? Well don't worry, we are sure the first quote is Forman, not Polanski, we double checked.

I stay at the Chelsea because I like the creative atmosphere, the thick walls, the high ceilings, the friendly people. You know, some people think that all sorts of wild things are always happening at the Chelsea, but I find it so peaceful. You can have 150% privacy.

Dirty walls, crap decor, luckily we didn't catch anything. I certainly do not recommend.

This is NOT a place stay while on a trip to NYC with your mother. Or your young children. Not even your wife (unless she's really, really, cool). This is a place to stay with your crazy girlfriend.

Christina Ricci was staying there the same weekend I was, so the place can't be as bad as some make it out to be!

This is the real s**t, the place to be if you want atmosphere and a real NYC experience.

"Hotel Chelsea Nights"

How long's it gonna be, babe Before I get over you, doll You're tearin' the stuff right out of me kid

What with you living right up the hall

And I'm tired of living in this hotel TV and dirty magazines And I'm tired of livin' on 23rd Street Strung out like some Christmas lights

Out there in the Chelsea night

Maybe you just didn't read me right The lights went out and you just sitting on the stair I played your song but I couldn't get the melody right

Why don't you just shoot up like a ball of rubber bands

And I'm tired of living in this hotel Fire and ashes blowin' cross the sheets And I'm tired of livin' on 23rd Street Strung out like some Christmas lights

Out there in the Chelsea night

I fell like getting rid of all my things Maybe just disappear into the fall The traffic roars and my stomach screams

Sittin' here watchin' roaches climb the wall

And I'm tired of living here in this hotel Following a rainbow into town And I'm just trying to get a little sleep Strung out like some Christmas lights

Out there in the Chelsea night
