The Montage Hotel: What Would Brandon Walsh Do?

Where: Wilshire Boulevard [map], Beverly Hills, CA, United States, 90210

Ah...Beverly Hills 90210.

You think: the celebrities, the palm tree-lined streets, big mansions, and the glamorous stretch of Rodeo Drive with well-heeled shoppers prancing around carrying tiny dogs in matching outfits. But Beverly Hills has an actual community filled with real people, dammit, albeit real people with a nasty little Botox habit.

And this community has been split over an upcoming election in which a ballot for the proposed Montage Hotel Beverly Hills has taken center stage.

The Montage Hotel will be a 214-room hotel built on Wilshire Boulevard one block east of Rodeo and cost $200 million. The hotel will include a spa, retail shops, restaurants and an additional 25 condo units on the top floor. In addition, the hotel promises to add 33,000 square feet of public gardens and open space. Uh oh, looks like the CoTel craze is gripping the West Coast as well.

More On The Montage Hotel Project...

The tricky thing is the proposed site is practically across the street from the Pretty Woman Hotel, and is within a mile of the Peninsula Hotel Beverly Hills, and the The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Beverly Hilton, Raffles L'Ermitage, the Four Seasons and Luxe Hotel Rodeo. Think there are enough hotels in the area?

The other tricky thing is some residents claim the hotel project will bring more traffic to the heavily-congested area, though no one in California really understands the term "car pool," or better yet, "public transportation."

These folks are trying to force the city to pony up millions of dollars, on its own, to mitigate the consequences of this hotel.

Big surprise here, supporters of the hotel say just the opposite. According to supporters the hotel will bring the city more money, which can be used for schools, fire and the police. Plus, there will be more parking and more importantly a garden, and we all know the therapeutic value of a well placed garden.

Both sides have waged huge public relations campaigns regarding the issue, holding meetings, posting signs and deluding residents with daily mailers. Rumor has it the Peninsula Hotel owner gave dropped 500k on the hotel opponents.

Come March 8, the townsfolk will decide if the hotel should stay or go.

Our money is on a "Donna Martin graduates" chant breaking out on March 8, stay tuned.
