Not since the mosquito has something so small and bloodsucking made so many headlines--don't worry southern buffalo gnat, your day will come. The NY Times bed bug article seemed a tad sensational, but then two Swiss women decided to sue a hotel for having disgusting bed bugs and bed bug stories became a full blown cottage industry.

This got us thinking, where's the Bed-land Security?

More Than You Ever Wanted To Know Post Break

Bed Bug Q&A
What's That Bug is a site where you can post pics of your bloodsucking bed-mates, ask questions, and find out general info about the suckers.

Preventative Sprays
Concerns about the insects are such that an Atlanta-based firm will soon begin offering hotels, motels, and private homes a preventive treatment that will ensure a bed bug-free environment for one year, according to the company.

Trust The Canadians To Find The Answer
If dog's can sniff cocaine, they surely can sniff bed bugs! This is the thesis of a Toronto based pest control company.

Michael Goldman, president of Purity Pest Control Limited and Common Scents Solutions has a trained dog that will pick the distinct smell of bed bugs and point them out to his master. Mr. Goldman's dog "Cody" was previously trained to sniff out termites and has recently had his skills upgraded to include bed bugs.

Note: Cody is one of two bed bug detecting dogs in the world, so until these two breed, it will be really tough for many hotels to take advantage of the dog sniffing thing.

There are also natural treatments available from shops like "grass roots", but usually  you are best to have a firm do the treatment for you.

As for the dogs  - the skill is learnt, not specifically bred, although certain breeds are more likely to be more successful, so it is inot a matter of waiting for trained dogs to "mate".

In addition to Toronto, there are companies in the US, California who have canine detection.
