Santa Visits NYC Hotels Early

December 21, 2005 at 9:26 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

New York City hotels are not as open on Christmas day as one might normally believe.

The NY Post reports that the Mandarin Oriental, the New York Peninsula, the Ritz-Carlton Central Park and the Lowell Hotel are all reporting higher room rates AND higher occupancy.

The Mandarin Oriental costs $655 on Christmas Day, up a marginal $30 from last year but is already sold out.

The Peninsula has a 10 percent increase in occupancy with rooms costing on average $100 more than 2004.

The Lowell Hotel still has some rooms left but at $400, not last year's rate of $310.

But the winner is the Ritz-Carlton who is charging $1,000 a night, up 20 percent from last year.

The official quote:

"It's unheard of," said the hotel's Jennifer Oberstein. "[Occupancy] was good in 2004 but its amazing this year -- and people are staying four or five nights instead of one or two."
