Hotel In Question: Hotel Gansevoort

Zagat's Take:

"A fantastic location in Manhattan's hottest neighborhood" - the Meatpacking District - gives this "trendster" an edge; it's certainly "trying to be cool" with a "swanky design" featuring back-lit glass in changing colors, plasma TVs (even in the elevator), a "sleek" Japanese eatery, Ono, and that "amazing" landscaped rooftop lounge with a heated pool and 360-degree views (look down at the once-private goings-on atop the exclusive Soho House nearby); the only quibbles are "small" rooms and "noise" from the area's many hot restaurants; N.B. a spa opens in fall 2005.

HotelChatter's Take:
Don't know about the "hottest" neighborhood stuff, however, despite the ever-present B&T crowd, the rooftop does come with an amazing view, and being able to ogle the Soho House roof is the pièce de résistance. Ok, $14 for a Jack and Ginger is way out of control, but the rooms are no smaller than any other trendy hotel in Manhattan, and they are a lot newer, which means flat screen tvs and a lot less wear and tear. We found the Gansevoort noise free back in August, however, for many folks that wasn't the case. Ticklers at the mini bar, gay cowboys, gorgeous views -- yeah, folks definitely have a love hate relationship with the Dennis Rodman of hotels, but for us, there is nothing like a hotel that generates a reaction from people.
