The antithesis to small roomed downtown Manhattan boutique hotels?  The unusually large roomed Sherry-Netherland hotel on Fifth Avenue.

According to the NY Post, Sherry residents are formulating a plan to go co-op or condo, doing away with the properties 53 guest rooms.

There is a bit of history here:

The illustrious hotel facing Central Park has been home to many of the wealthy and famous since it opened in 1927. Rat packers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. used it as their East Coast base. Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, George Burns, Danny Kaye, Jack Warner and William Holden have all been in residence. Director Francis Ford Coppola even raised his daughter, "Lost in Translation" director Sofia Coppola, there.

These days SN residents are disgruntled.  They lost their in-house restaurant (Cipriani) and have to order from Dial-a-meal, there's no beauty parlor, and no security dude.

"We went from a four-star to a no-star property -- there are backpackers staying here -- and instead of offering breakfast in the lobby, there's a bowl of apples on the concierge's desk," said one resident, indignantly.

Almost makes us want to strap on a backpack, book a room at this place and munch on an apple while sitting in the lobby.
