Normally Joe-Schmo gets to glimpse these buildings in passing, can see the details on line, or read about them in a book. If Joe-Schmo is into city's and architecture, he might try to sneak in, or, if he is a real architect-phyle, he may submit a resume just to glimpse the foyer.

October 8-10 is the Annual Open House New York. Several of the city's more obscure and normally "closed to the public" buildings will open their doors for weekend peaks.

Some of the city's most spectacular hotels are offering tours. Even if you are lucky enough to have been a guest, this is a chance to appreciate these hotels for their structure, decadence, and design, and not just for their complimentary booze drinks. The Carlton Hotel, W New York at Union Square, and The Waldorf Astoria will offer tours and behind the scenes insight. Be prepared to stand in line, and be sure to check the times and date of the tour you plan on attending.
