How Old Money Does Manhattan
While the Lowell has a rep of being a tad bit stuffy and pretentious (watercolor kits and sketchpads for every guest?) there is no denying that this place has a loyal following among those who can afford the steep room rates.
The property is an old apartment building located on the Upper East Side off Madison Avenue and houses 47 individually decorated rooms most equipped with apartment style living.
This place is definitely for travelers willing to pay for top notch service--think the portion of the Four Seasons crowd that feels the Four Seasons is slipping.
On recent visitor added:
The Lowell caters to those who do not wish to stay at an "in" hotel, though, I think it's standard is better than most well-know grand hotels in the city. It's not affiliated with any chain, and you can tell the moment you arrive. There are no key cards; instead actual room keys that you leave with the desk staff (whom after the first time you return, have their arm extended with your key before you open your mouth).
So, no, you probably won't see Michael Jackson dressed as Mickey Mouse roaming the halls of the Lowell
