Amazing Race 5 Hotel Update: A Differnet Side of Kolkata
This week the Amazing Race pit stop was the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta. Now we doubt the racers actually stayed at the British Raj's answer to the Taj Mahal, so that begs the question, where o where did those wacky racers actually spend their twelve hours between race legs. We are hoping CBS splurged and put them up at the Oberoi Grand, Kolkata (Kolkata, Calcutta, two spellings, one city).
When we get a glimpse of India, and more notably, Calcutta, on shows like Amazing Race it is impossible to not be affected by the absolute masses of humanity this city houses. However, when we checked out the Oberoi Grand, we realized, as expected, there are many different faces to this coin. The Oberoi Grand is a beautiful hotel hidden off a main street in Calcutta and offers visitors everything they could want in a property, with style. Corinthian columns, green marble floors, and cool spacious rooms help define this properties elegance.
A quick check of the Grand's online reservation system shows us you can get all this for a rate of around $100! Come on CBS give your bleary eyed contestants a break, shack `em up at the Oberoi Grand.
So the obvious question becomes is the Grand too much of a contrast to the poverty, smell, and crowds that lurk not far from its door? Will you feel uncomfortable staying here?
Well here are the thoughts of one recent Oberoi Grand guest on that very question:
Yes, of course The Grand is a contrast to the majority of life in Kolkata, outside on the pavements millions of people eat, sleep and wash, and it is the same all over India. Yet, somehow, I get the feeling that the colonial Grand manages to be a symbol of the city and a place locals are proud of.
