New Hampshire Appalachian Huts: An oasis for weary hikers

August 27, 2004 at 11:49 AM | by | Comments (0)

Turns out the Appalachian Mountain Club runs seven full service huts (and one not so full service hut) along the Appalachain trail.  This article tipped us off to the NH mountain huts, and we decided to do a little more digging.

These huts offer novice hikers (umm that would be us) an alternative to the Clif Bar and Sub Zero sleeping bag approach to hiking.  Sounds like your back will thank you for checking in at one of these huts, that way you don't have to lug all yo' camping gear up 5,000 ft.

The biggest, highest, and most popular hut, is the Lakes of the Clouds Hut near the summit of Mt. Washington.  This hut sleeps 90, and will run you $51 (adult) for dinner, bunk, and breakfast.

The hut is in full service June 2-Sept 18.

There are eight of these huts, all in NH, and they are all said to be a "days hike" apart.  The entire stretch of huts is 56 miles.

Reservations can be made online, at the AMC site.

This looks to be New England's version of Cinque Terra, sans the towns, and the trains.
