The lobby is the centerpoint of this property. It is a fishbowl type lobby with two levels, inner bowl, and outer bowl. Both areas are lined with plenty of seating, and both levels have a bar. There are even a couple foosball tables on the outer level.
Many boutique hotels have a non-existent lobby, but W New York has a lobby built for hanging, sipping wine, and deal making. This hotel definitely caters to business travelers, and the fact that the lobby is full of free wireless helps the property woo biz clientele.
As for the rooms, they are definitely on the smaller side, but we aren't talking about Schraeger closets here. The rooms may be small, but they are still livable.
The beds are comfy, and the bathrooms roomy. The shower appears to be what they call "rainforest". All we know is you can take a shower right there on the floor, no tub or anything, yet somehow the water does not get all over the bathroom floor, it simply goes down the drain. Amazing.
Oh yeah, and for all you hipsters, Gerber's Whisky Blue is attached to the lobby. So if you want to go in and talk about rating bonds, or other financial indicies, you should feel right at home. At least that was the crowd on a Tuesday night.
Overall takeThere is something about the original. In this case, we don't know if this is the original W, but it sure feels like it. The property may be a little older, and the quarters may be a little more cramped, but if you find a rate to your liking (say under $200), and you are in the mood for a classic boutique experience, the W New York shouldn't disappoint. If the hotel does disappoint, you can always just chase your blues away at Whisky Blue.
Full Disclosure: We got a good rate, but we paid for this room
