Is the Mercer Hotel just about the hippest place in the world or what?  When you walk into Andre Balazs' Mercer Hotel there is no sign, no branding, just a bunch of people chatting it up in the lobby/lounge area.

The spare design of the Hotel's interior and exterior might remind some of kottke.org, but at the hotel, as with the site, content is king.  Just check out the Mercer website, and you will see that this hotel doesn't muck around with clutter.

The Mercer boasts an open, comfortable, lobby, which invites visitors to sit down and spend a little time.  With free wireless floating around the hotel, who wouldn't want to stay in the lobby for a bit?

The staff appears extremely helpful and friendly, and why shouldn't they be?  A quick check of Tablet Hotels shows the Mercer's lowest overnight rate at a screeching $395.  Wow.

So what do you get for $400 a night?  The experience of living in a trendy SoHo loft.  Balazs and his crew have turned all ~70 rooms into lofts.

This property really does feel like part of the neighborhood.

If anyone out there has been lucky enough to stay at the Mercer let us know about your experience.
