Travelers inspiring travelers. It's a great concept. If you want to attract hotelgoers, appeal to their passion.
That's what Chip Conley did in his recent renovation of the 1928 Hotel Carlton. $6 million and one year after he took it over, the Carlton is attracting bohemian budget travelers who don't want to compromise comfort for a few bucks.
"But unlike most of the JDV properties, whose overall design schemes were inspired by magazines (the Phoenix's rock star crash pad vibe, for instance, was inspired by the pages of Rolling Stone magazine), the Hotel Carlton's interior was actually inspired by the Lonely Planet travel guide series a tip of the hat, so to speak, to the international travelers who have frequented this property on the westernmost cusp of S.F.'s hotel district for decades now."The Examiner
A private collection of photographs, courtesy of the archives of the San Francisco-based American Himalayan Foundation are displayed throughout the lobby and guestrooms.
"Guestrooms are appointed with charming international accents, including imported hand-painted Moroccan tables, Lucite-beaded table lamps that echo a classic `40's-style vanity lamp, and a comfortable `30s-style easy chair...
Marni Leis said of the guestroom design, "It feels like an overnight stay at your globetrotting Swedish grandmother's house."
