Hotel Palomar: Staying On Top Of Old Navy in SF

Hotel Palomar is a classy stay right in the heart of San Francisco. The Palomar offers great rooms, free wireless, and a central (4th @ Market) location. San Francisco is a city of neighborhoods, but Hotel Palomar sits decidedly outside of any real neighborhood boundaries. It's not quite in Union Square, not in the SOMA, yet in the middle of everything. Perched on Market Street right next to the Powell St. station, Palomar offers easy access to Muni, as well as BART (taking BART from SFO to Palomar is a snap).
From the hotel's location, you can easily saunter up to Union Square and all its shops, or cross Market and head towards SOMA and the ballpark. Furthermore, the Metreon is only a short block away. One small warning, if you are adverse to the homeless, you may want to avoid SF in general (big time homelessness), and you will definitely deal with the homeless crew directly outside the hotel. Don't worry they are harmless folks.
Hotel Palomar was not our first Kimpton Hotel stay, and after staying at a multitude of Kimptons we have one question: Do they train Kimpton employees at the In-N-Out Burger school of nice? (That was an inside joke for you west coast folks.) Every time we go to one of these Kimpton properties we are treated great. This time we asked for an early check in, and a room switch to a room with two double beds. Both requests were made immediately and with smiles. The Kimpton folks are on top of their game as far as service goes.
On the other hand, the cleaning staff was clearly not on top of their game. When we returned to our room at 4pm, we were surprised to find the staff was in our room, just getting to servicing it. This seems to be a trend at hotels recently, the late service; don't know why but it is bothersome.
What was the Palomar like inside? Well, the lobby isn't anything to speak of (small and open to crowded 4th Street), however, there is larger lobby of sorts on the fifth floor. The fifth floor houses a bar and a swank restaurant, imaginatively called The Fifth Floor. Still, it doesn't feel extremely comfortable. The people on the fifth floor are there for the fine dining, thus you will have to take your more casual activities outside the hotel's walls to feel low key.
As for the rooms, they are definitely "Kimpton Sheik". Leopard print carpet, big ol' comfy beds, and a roomy atmosphere make the chambers unique and inviting. There is at least one strange design element apparent in the rooms; the shower. Apparently someone thought it was a good idea to have separated the showers pressure controls and temperature controls. Yup, that's right, you have two separate and distinct levers for water pressure and water temperature. Makes for a confusing morning shower.
Bonus Point #1
Since you are staying atop Old Navy, you don't have to do laundry or worry about ironing during your stay, you can simply grab some new duds from Old Navy. Of course, this is assuming you are on what the industry calls a "leisure trip".
Bonus Point #2
As an added bonus for you voyeurs out there: If you get a room on the left side of the property, on one of the top floors, you should be able to peer into Salon headquarters and watch the old time web wordsmiths do their thing. Just remember, they can watch you as well.
