Algonquin Hotel's $13,000 diamond martini pays off

December 9, 2004 at 2:58 PM | by arimoore | 0 Comments

Ladies and gentlemen, it's happened: The Algonquin Hotel's $13,000 martini publicity stunt has had a taker.

Here's how it went down: Joe Imperato of Westchester County read about the cocktail in the Daily News, and knew it was the perfect way to propose to his girlfriend, Melissa Beck. He notified the hotel the required three days in advance, which gave the hotel's jeweler, Bader & Garrin, time to set the perfect rock in a platinum engagement band -- and gave the hotel time to set up a bunch of press.

We're not sure how Melissa didn't notice the banks of cameras on Tuesday night, but she did catch on to their song playing in the hotel bar (Stevie Nicks' "Leather and Lace"). Joe fished the ring out of the drink (mmm, olivey) and told her he loved her -- and magic was made.

Hotel Chatter has one question: Isn't life getting to be a little too much like reality television?
