The case of the mysteriously expanding hotel bill

October 19, 2004 at 4:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

Watch out next time you hunt down a cheap hotel online. According to USA Today's Chris Woodyard, "there's more pressure than ever on hotels to keep basic rates low so they can trounce competitors on Internet travel sites. Then they try to add on fees when the guests visit."

We're all familiar with the Temptation of the Mini-bar, but Chris uncovers scores of hidden charges you'd never guess at: everything from $15 for a phone call, to $3 a day for housekeeping, to $40 a night for parking. His suggestions for keeping your bill down? Buy a phone card, join free programs offered by your hotel that will give you lower rates or free phone and internet access, don't even bring your car -- and find out about extra fees before you check in.
