On December 14, Disney will open its newest resort, Pop Century, located near Disney World in Florida.

The resort will open with 2,880 rooms that will be housed in building clusters that pay homage to childhood experiences of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. A phase two build out, due to open sometime next year, will add another ~2,880 rooms to the mix. The second phase will focus on pop culture from the 10's, 20's, 30's, and 40's.

The two resort sections will be separated by the "Hourglass Lake", and be connected by the "Generation Gap" bridge. Pop Century is Disney's most ambitious project since 9/11 and executives are hoping reasonable room rates ($77-$124*) and stinging nostalgia will help visitors flock to the resort in '04.

Will it work? Only time will tell.

Finally, keep in mind the resort is not on the monorail system, so if you are staying here be prepared to deal with the Disney buses or rent a car. Epcot is the closest park and is a ~10 minute drive away according to a resort representative.
