Overview
If you love the proverbial weekend in Vegas, but live on the East Coast, and need a place to get your Vegas fix without flying three quarters of the way across the country, then head to the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville Connecticut.

Getting There
Driving, or Busing to the Sun are the two most efficient ways to get there. If you drive you’ll be happy to know that parking is complementary. From Boston, MA: Take I-90 (Mass Pike) West to I-395 South. Take Exit 79A (Route 2A) East. Go 1 mile to Mohegan Sun Boulevard.

Inside
Once inside the Casino it is easy to fall into the requisite casino maze trap and have no idea where you are. There are two main casinos connected by a mall of retail stores. Todd English has an Italian joint right in the middle of the structure with a faux waterfall that is one of the many Vegas influences in the Sun. The Sun’s innards include many popular retail outlets, Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse, Starbucks, and even a Ben & Jerry’s. Update: A Krispy Kreme is now open inside the Sun! As of 10/27/03.

Rooms
As you make your way up to the rooms you notice the details of the lobby and hallway help the place carry off a “Vegas classy” feel that isn’t quite classy, but is definitely well appointed, clean and modern.

The rooms themselves are spacious enough and seemed well kept.

Amenities
Further amenities include a pool and a spa, neither of which I visited, but I could see the lounge area of the pool from my room and it was fairly full on a late September afternoon.

Casino
A quick check of the resort performance calendar was fairly impressive. Billy Bob Thornton’s group, the Bacon Brothers, and Bruce Willis’ band dominated the booking list in the smaller Wolf Den venue. While country headliners and championship boxing dominated the Sun Arena schedule.

The casino itself isn’t for the faint of heart, most tables are $25, but if you search you can uncover at a $10 craps table or two.

Prices
The room prices also were steep the weekend I visited (Sept. 20), but that could be because their was a heavyweight title bout in the arena portion of the resort (yeah it is that big).

Conclusion
All in all the best way to describe this place is a slice of Vegas on the East Coast. I haven’t been to cross town rival Foxwoods, but the sentiment of the clientele at the Sun suggested that Foxwoods wasn’t quite as nice as the Sun. Sour grapes? I’ll reserve judgment until I check out Foxwoods myself.

If you are in the North East and want to check it out try this link.

The hotel fills up fast; so don’t be surprised if you have to play around a little before you get available dates.
