Miami Hotel Restaurant Mambo: Raleigh & W SoBe Get New Chefs

Solea, as the tabloids say, in happier times.
Miami Spice is still offering its cheap eats through the end of September, but the latest hotel news in South Beach has us thinking ahead to next year's Spice--when two new restaurants will be in place at two of the most high-profile properties in town.
We were waxing lyrical about The Royal at The Raleighjust last week--and it's only been there since last November--but clearly our love is not enough to prevent change. Miami's most famous chef, Michael Schwartz of Michael's Genuine, is moving into the Raleigh, probably by the end of the year.
That's huge. But it's not the only restaurant revolving door spinning--the Miami New Times blog Short Order also informs us that Solea is out at W South Beach, and NYC-cool eatery The Dutch is taking its place. Well, isn't this a lot to chew on? (Ha!)

Who Will Now Be Setting The Tempo in Miami?
UPDATE: Confirmed: Richfield Hospitality will be running the Tempo Miami.
Yesterday we reported on how Rock Resorts dropped the Tempo Miami from their roster of hotels. Supposedly the split from the hotel owners was "amicable" which is always good news to hear. Yet our minds were already turned to the new management company that would be setting up shop in the hotel.
We asked and we received. A tipster let us know that Richfield Hospitality will now be setting the tempo for Tempo Miami. This is the same management company that's in place at The Joule in Dallas and the St. Regis Deer Crest in Park City as well as a few other full service and select service hotels (Hiltons, Four Points, etc.)
Like any good management company, Richfield promises "revenue-generating hotel operations" which is probably what the owners of Tempo Miami are looking for...quick.

RockResorts Says Tempo Miami Is Not the Right Tempo For Them

Looks like what's happening with the Edition Waikiki has spurred a sort of mini-trend...at least in Miami.
Just a week after Fairmont Turnberry Isle was let go from their management contract by the hotel's owners, the Rock Resorts brand has decided that, after just a little over a year open, they no longer want to run the Tempo Miami. The company has even put out a press release saying so:
Vail Resorts, Inc. (NYSE: MTN) announced today that as of September 15 its subsidiary RockResorts will no longer manage Tempo Miami as part of its luxury hotel brand.
Ownership and RockResorts have mutually agreed that ownership's direction for the Tempo Miami hotel does not fit with the RockResort brand or its direction, and therefore the parties have agreed to amicably terminate their relationship.

Four Seasons Miami Gets a Fresh Face For Fall

Ah, fall. Back to school, back to work. And, for hotels, back to the drawing board! The Four Seasons Miami is just one of the hotels in the 305 going for a fresh look, and we have to say: it's looking pretty elegant.
The new room design was conceptualized as an update to the hotel's Art Deco style, and helmed by the original designer of the hotel's interiors, Frank Nicholson. Apparently, he was inspired by the Four Seasons Miami's $3-million art collection when coming up with the new look.

The Royal At The Raleigh Is a Mouthful of Deliciousness

Our view from the patio at The Royal.
Ever since The Raleigh Hotel debuted its new restaurant last winter, we've found it a bit of a mouthful--try saying "The Royal at The Raleigh" three times fast. As it turns out, though, it's a delicious mouthful.
We hit up The Royal at The Raleigh yesterday for a Miami Spice lunch and urge anyone within spitting distance of the hotel to follow suit before this resto promotion ends on September 30. We were eyeing up the menu here before Miami Spice even started, and it does not disappoint.

We Take a Design Nerd Stroll Through The Delano

Since it opened in 1994, the Delano Hotel has defined what it means to be a chic, South Beach boutique hotel.
Next year, its creative guru Philippe Starck will give the beach a new vision, with his work on SLS South Beach--mere steps away from the hotel that started it all. But can he top the ground-breaking work he produced for Ian Schrager at Delano?
After we took an 'ethos tour' with Delano GM Steven Hiblum, who pointed out the little quirks we'd missed on previous strolls through the lobby, and told us all about Starck's inspiration for his designs, we're not sure he can.

Now It's Fairmont's Turn to Be Kicked Out of a Hotel

Edition Hotels may still be making news, what with the management of the Edition Waikiki--now Modern Honolulu--kicking out the Marriott-hybrid brand. But that's not the only Hotel De-Branding going on. We've just heard that Fairmont Hotels has been kicked out of what was known as the Fairmont Turnberry Isle.
A tipster let us know that on Sunday, Fairmont was shown the door by the property's owners, Turnberry LLC, even though the hotel group has a 50-year contract to manage the place and despite a last-ditch attempt by some Fairmont execs.
Fairmont's executive team flew in on private jets to try to reconcile their differences only to be escorted off property by police officers (Not Hotel Security, Police Officers). Turberry Isle has spent the last 2 days removing all Fairmont signage all around the property, throwing away everything. Apparently, the marriage between the two wasn't working after Turnberry Isle reported a loss of nearly 4 million dollars in the last 90 days.

Miami's Sofitel Gets Evacuated But a Bomb Threat, Not a Storm, is to Blame

UPDATE: The hotel has gotten an "All Clear" from the bomb squad and guests have been allowed back in their rooms. Phew!
Miami Beach hotels are no strangers to evacuations at this time of year when tropical storms and hurricanes are swirling all around but at the Sofitel Miami near the airport was evacuated this morning due to something far more sinister--a bomb threat. WSVN-TV reports:
According to Miami-Dade Police, the threat was phoned in to the hotel located at 5800 Blue Lagoon Drive, and people inside the hotel, including staff and guests, were evacuated at around 11 a.m. Monday. Officers and firefighters went door-to-door at the hotel to make sure everyone had been evacuated. Blue Lagoon Drive has been shutdown in both directions. As the evacuees stood in the hot sun, the crowd was offered food and Water. Miami-Dade Transit buses were called to the scene to allow those waiting outside to cool off until they are allowed back inside the building.

Yes, Those Unicorns Are Local

Look at that adorable critter! No, we're not talking about Aimee Teegarden of Friday Night Lights (although she's pretty darn cute, too). We mean the life-sized mama and baby unicorns who live at the new ELLE Spa at the Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach.
Now, we have to admit: we spent some time working in this spa for its launch, and no matter what kind of spa-stress was going on (yes, it happens), we were always charmed into a smile when we passed these guys. But beyond that, we had no idea who the unicorns belonged to, and why the hell they were hangin' out. So, we did some investigating and it turns out that, in fact, these unicorns are local.

How Much Does It Cost To Be A High Roller At The Fontainebleau?

What do Jay-Z, Pitbull, Dwayne Wade and LeBron's mom have in common? They all love the Fontainebleau—and, in the case of Jay and Pitbull, don't mind dropping some major cash there.
Dwayne Wade's Fantasy Camp may be going down at the Miami Beach hotel this weekend, but there's even bigger fish in this pond. It is reported that Jay-Z blew $250,000 on champagne for his Watch the Throne release party. And $50,000 in tips at Scarpetta, where he noshed on posh Italian with his entourage. We shudder to think what kind of numbers were on his room folio.

Who's That Chick on the Wall at the Mondrian South Beach?

Hotel art. It can be beautiful, weird and—sometimes—stolen. But nothing we've seen has quite topped the computer-generated lady heads that currently greet guests at the Mondrian South Beach.
We first encountered these bug-eyed chicks when we stayed at the hotel two years ago. We loved everything about the Alice-in-white-Wonderland decor. Except maybe these blown-up doll heads. The more we stared at the one in our room (above), the creepier she seemed, and the more the question bumped around in the back of our brains: Who is she and why is she staring at us all the time?
