INTERNATIONAL HOTEL WIFI
The good news remains in 2009 that more and more international hotels are keen to the free WiFi scene. However, some properties still aren't getting the message and are gouging customers to access the internet. And just because your fave hotel brand gives you free internet at home does not mean that the same brand's exotic vacation location abroad will do the same.
Here's some of the Best and Worst International Hotel WiFi, based on our personal experiences as well as some well-known WiFi Hell stories.
Radisson Blu Hotels have free wireless in many of their properties throughout Europe. The chain even has a handy list of which hotels offer this service.
United Kingdom
The Park Inn Hotel in London charges 15 pounds for internet.
City Inn Hotels in London offer it for free.
Spain
The Hotel Omm in Barcelona has free wireless throughout.
El Coloso Hotel in Madrid charges $26 for WiFi, but it's free in the lobby.
The Gallery Hotel in Barcelona offers wireless for free, but the connection was slow in the rooms and in the business center that we had to seek a signal elsewhere.
France
The Hotel de Crillon in Paris has free WiFi for its well-heeled guests.
The Five Hotel in Paris also has blazing free WiFi for guests.
Germany
The Leonardo Hotel in Munich promised free WiFi but it wasn't working during our two-day stay. We had to go to a Starbucks nearby and buy a monthly account, as that was the only internet option in the java joint.
Hungary
The Four Seasons in Budapest has WiFi for free in the business center, but not for free in the rooms.
Uruguay
Hotel Plaza Fuerte in Montevideo has free WiFi in-rooms.
Colombia
Sofitel Cartagena has free wireless, but the in-room signal was so bad we had to go down to the ground floor (closer to the router) to get working service.
Mexico
The Rosewood Mayakoba, a beachfront resort, charges for in-room internet perhaps as a gentle reminder that you shouldn't be spending your time at a beach resort on the computer.
China
Hotel Nina in Hong Kong had no WiFi, incredibly slow internet and a charge of $40USD a day.
Malaysia
The Taj Rebak Langkawi in Penang offered a cable that didn't work with our computer in-room and offered free WiFi in the lobby and the bar that kept cutting out.
Sydney
The Establishment Hotel finally convinced us that Sydney hotels were not as big of a free WiFi-hater as we'd previously thought.
Johannesburg
The Radisson Blu has just opened in Johannesburg with free WiFi.
The Peech Hotel also has unlimited free WiFi in its rooms.
