Yes, Jetsetcd, it was indeed the heated outdoor swimming pool at The Conrad that we spied on last month during our trip to Hong Kong.

The hotel is attached to Pacific Place, one of many luxury shopping malls in the city. It's also across the way (via an indoor walkway) from the Island Shangri-La Hotel, another traditional luxury hotel.

Since rooms go for about $573 a night here, we made do with peeping in on some of the other parts of the hotel. Sadly, we didn't get inside a room but you can always study those here.

But we did happen to notice a striking piece of public art right across the street. Situated between the hotel and the Hudson River is a craggy, hilly, and entirely un-Manhattan public park known as the Irish Hunger Memorial. <![CDATA[<img src="http://www.hotelchatter.com/files/61268/Conrad_New_York___atrium_rendering.jpg" class="top">Still aiming for an "early 2012" opening, <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/hotel-reviews/Conrad+New+York/local/4796">Conrad New York</a> is finally ready to offer us a glimpse inside its 463-room Financial District property. Above is the 14-story-high Sol LeWitt mural, "Loopy Doopy," rendered in shades of purple and blue, that hangs dramatically above the lobby. Facing it is another large-scale work, designed by Monica Ponce de Leon, and installed by Feature Walters: this one, a two-tiered wall sculpture entitled "Veil" that required 77 tons of aluminum and 16 miles of Vectran cable. We like how the fat, squiggly lines of the sculpture play off of Sol LeWitt's paintingalmost as if the arms had come alive inside the lobby. See below for a snapshot from inside one

Around the 300-room hotel are the <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/hotel-reviews/The+Peninsula+Beijing/local/2997">Peninsula Beiing</a>, <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/hotel-reviews/Hilton+Beijing+Wangfujing+/ian/269088">Hilton Beijing</a> and <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/hotel-reviews/Crowne+Plaza+Hotel+Beijing+Zhongguancun/ian/272621">Crowne Plaza</a>. Conrad Beijing's warped exterior is supposed to evoke <del>The Flintstones</del> "nervous tissue", though we find it strikingly similar to the facade at the new <a href="http://www.hotelchatter.com/story/2011/10/20/172520/71/hotels/Wait_What_OMG_Andaz_Shanghai_is_Now_Open_">Andaz Shanghai</a>, which also boasts a chunky, grid-like white exterior. Conrad's is decidedly more trippy, which makes sense, as Conrad, though always elegant, likes to keep things playful.
