Hong Kong: Peeping In On The Conrad Hong Kong

It's also across the way (via an indoor walkway) from the Island Shangri-La Hotel, another traditional luxury hotel.
Since rooms go for about $573 a night here, we made do with peeping in on some of the other parts of the hotel. Sadly, we didn't get inside a room but you can always study those here.

New York: How To Spot Ireland From Your Window At Conrad New York

And from what we can tell, there's still quite a bit of work to be done—all the windows are covered, and machinery surrounds the entrance.
But we did happen to notice a striking piece of public art right across the street. Situated between the hotel and the Hudson River is a craggy, hilly, and entirely un-Manhattan public park known as the Irish Hunger Memorial. Dedicated in 2002 to raise awareness of the famine that swept Ireland in the mid-1800s, the memorial consists of actual stones, soil and vegetation that was shipped over

New York: First Look: Huge Artwork In The Lobby, Plus A Sneak Peek Inside The Guestrooms At Conrad New York

Above is the 14-story-high Sol LeWitt mural, "Loopy Doopy," rendered in shades of purple and blue, that hangs dramatically above the lobby.
Facing it is another large-scale work, designed by Monica Ponce de Leon, and installed by Feature Walters: this one, a two-tiered wall sculpture entitled "Veil" that required 77 tons of aluminum and 16 miles of Vectran cable. We like how the fat, squiggly lines of the sculpture play off of Sol LeWitt's painting—almost as if the arms had come alive inside the lobby.
See below for a snapshot from inside one

Conrad's is decidedly more trippy, which makes sense, as Conrad, though always elegant, likes to keep things playful. On March 2, however, that rate drops to $239.
Earlier this week when we checked in on the NYC hotels that have and have not opened so far, we mentioned The Conrad New York, down in Battery Park City, which we thought was still opening later this year.
Alas, commenter SalesManagerNYC let us know that while the Conrad now has a website (yay!), the hotel is not taking reservations until February 1 2012. (Ed. Note: we previously reported February 12th. That was wrong, it's now February 1st.) Wah wah.
But we found something else to cheer us back
