Sure, a free shuttle runs between the convention center and conference hotels, but your best bet is to grab a hotel as close to the sci-fi scene as possible.

San Diego: Some Last-Minute Hotel Options for Comic-Con Travelers

Comic-Con will land in San Diego next week from July 21 to 25, and while geeks all over the country are excited to attend and see J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, Ray Bradbury and Neal Adams, what's not so exciting is trying to book a hotel near the event.
Most of the hotels near the Comic-Con site have sold out, but there are still options for late comers to the sci-fi party. But book 'em now, because they likely will go faster than you can say "fanboy."

San Diego: San Diego's Kitschy Old Town to Get a Boutique Hotel

San Diego's super-touristy Old Town neighborhood has as many kitschy shops as it does joints boasting to have the city's best margaritas. So it's no surprise that the spot that calls itself the birthplace of California is full of budget hotels. But a new boutique option, the Cosmopolitan Hotel, will open in June.
The Cosmo isn't exactly new. It's a restoration of a 183-year-old hotel. Originally the home to pioneer Juan Bandini, the building was converted into a hotel in 1869. Now, the Cosmo sits in a prime spot in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park that's surrounded by restaurants and shops.
