It went a little like this:

I was reading a 2008 article by Matt Chesterton on hotels in La Barra.
San Francisco: Luau in San Francisco for New Year's Eve

Most of these are highfalutin affairs where you'll find women competing in unofficial "Who has the shortest skirt?" contests, and where bottles of champagne circulate throughout the evening. These swanky soirees are easy enough to find, but for an unusual change of pace, you may want to consider heading to The Fairmont in San Francisco, where an inaugural New Year's luau will be held at the historic Tonga Room.
HotelChatter reader Mark, a long time Tonga Room patron, tipped us off to this unique NYE

Denver: Bid On eBay to Win The Entire Curtis Hotel For New Year's Eve

If hotels were people, The Curtis Hotel in Denver would most definitely not be a wallflower. A slightly kooky, always-energetic boss, or your life-of-the-party friend, perhaps. This is, after all, the hotel that has already caught our attention with a humungous doggie door, themed floors, and a ‘Stay Happy’ Contest.
Its relentlessly upbeat nature reminds us of the corporate culture of Zappos, or the new-fangled “positive psychology” craze. Often, this can get, well, a little much. But the latest promotion out of Planet Happy Curtis is so much a little much that it’s mega: the hotel is putting itself up for auction on eBay for New Year’s Eve.

London: New Year's Eve 2008: Your Private Party at London's Plaza on the River

Although it feels just way too early, it's probably time we all pinned down a plan for New Year's Eve this year. We haven't thought about it, but in London the Plaza on the River has and they've even put together a package. Yeah, they're more organized than we are.
The Plaza on the River is a pretty swanky place that is, as you'd expect, on the River Thames. Their suggestion is that you hold a private party in your suite there, and get one of the hotel's "in-room chefs" to prepare you all a gourmet meal. This idea definitely has something going for it, especially as you'll also be able to see the New Year
