But it's not all free breakfasts, goodie bags, and general hotel humanitarianism. The NY Daily News reported on a scary case of hotel swindling that took place over in Brooklyn (evacuation zone C, in case you were wondering).
Before we name the actual hotel who was caught charging stranded guests a spine-tingling $999 per night, we have to ask: in this day and age, is it really worth taking advantage of helpless hotel guests just to make a few extra hundred bucks? Inevitably, once the panic is over and the storm has passed, bad reviews will pop up, horror

Looks like Hurricane Irene was far worse in the fantasies of meteorologists everywhere than it actually turned out to be. That's not to say the hurricane, excuse us, tropical storm wasn't scary at times and even though it didn't pack the punch we all expected, there are still lots of people without power along the East Coast.
We'll let the regular news outlets handle the aftermath coverage but we did watch all the hotel-related Irene activity as it was happening on Twitter and here were some of our favorite hurricane-related hotel tweets.
· The London NYC tweeted us this gorgeous shot above from their hotel waiting for Irene to hit Central Park.
Boston: Another Reason Why You Want Hurricane Earl to Slow Down: Cheap Room Rates

So if Earl is cruising at 50mph this afternoon, that will be your room rate price for the night. Same thing goes if the wind is blowing up 75mph and 100mph. You can then extend your room stay for the following night at $175 a night. (Rates are typically around $275 a night.)
The room rate

Ew.
Nacogdoches boosted its rate of $49.99 (the advertised rate on the marquee) to $109; the Super 8 jacked their $99 rate up to $125 (sidenote: Super 8's are $99 to begin with? Wow). Also, both hotels charged evacuees both state and local hotel and motel taxes even though Texas governor Rick Perry waived them during the storm.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is suing both hotels to ensure that any

About 75% of the city lost electricity --including yours truly.

We were without news until we could get to civilization Monday (the office) where we learned the power company estimates a 10-14 day period with no power. That's no internet, no TV, no air conditioning, no lights, no appliances, zilch. What's a high-maintenance girl who dislikes showering by candlelight to do? Move into a hotel.

But wait.

There are all those pesky tourists in town, and not a hotel room to be found.
