New York: Behind the Hotel Music: What It's Like Playing in a Hotel

As of late, several Manhattan hotels have introduced new hotel concert series for guests and locals to attend. While we can't always expect Lady Gaga, we can expect something better than the too-trendy lobby trance sounds piped in on a CD. Now, have you ever wondered about the musicians you see in hotels playing for guests and other passersby? Well, wonder no more as Alex Schechter tells us about his recent musical residency at The Gershwin.
Starting in August, The Gershwin Hotel on E. 27th Street hosted my band Greene Girl for an artist residency program consisting of a weekly concert performed at noon in the main lobby.
Every Wednesday

It was super loud--which is a good thing--and had quite a club vibe for a sunset show. Pretty good crowd, too.
Rumor is that another show in the hotel's Private Park is coming up in two weeks, but don't see anything on the Giant Step website about it.
Related Stories:
· Party Dispatch :: Johnny Utah's Opens at the Rockefeller Center Hotel [HotelChatter]

Hollywood: Prince's First Concert at Hollywood Roosevelt Doesn't Include You and Your Friends

And it was a long night.
The paper reports that Prince didn't show up for the later, more intimate jazz session until 4am. But despite some sound problems (the LA Times blames that on the hotel's Blossom Room which was "expected in a room that's also been used for bar mitzvahs"), the night went off without a hitch.
MORE
